Canberra Outdoor Shoot Locations

Canberra has so many beautiful locations to explore. Whether it’s the bush, the river, the top of a mountain or a green forest there is something to suit everyone.

Here are some of my favourite outdoor locations to shoot in Canberra

Please note recommended session length
I have also included which locations are dog friendly

1 hour session minimum | Dog friendly

This spot is probably one of the most versatile in Canberra. Able to be accessed from many different locations in Chapman and Kambah with a steep but short walk up the to the top of the ridge. There are sweeping views of the Brindabellas, plenty of grassy hills and big boulders to climb on. There are always a few kangaroos keeping watch in the distance while you watch the sunset!

Cooleman Ridge

20 minutes session or longer | Dog friendly

A beautiful secluded bushland area in the heart of Canberra. One side of the park has lovely white gum trees and is shaded meaning it's perfect for a shoot at any time of the day. The other side of the park has flatter open grass area as well as bush land. Both have parking nearby making it easy for a shorter session but have plenty of places to explore for a longer session as well.

Stirling Park, Yarralumla

20 minutes session or longer | Dog friendly

If you are after an outdoor location but with something that also has some structure then this is the spot for you! The Yale Columbia Dome was burnt out by the 2003 bushfires, however the space that is left has so much character and is the perfect backdrop for photos. With views of the Brindabellas it’s perfect for golden sunsets but equally beautiful on cloudy days.

Mount Stromlo Observatory

20 minutes session or longer

The Cotter is the perfect spot for a summer swim or exploring along the banks of the river. There are plenty of different spots to explore depending on the type and length of the session. A great location for maternity and family photos, just be prepared to get a little wet! Some other river location options are Kambah Pool and Uriarra Crossing.

The Cotter River

1 hour session minimum | Dog friendly

A central location that is near the lake with plenty of trees as well as open spaces. Lots of space to explore this spot is better suited to a 1 hour session as there is a bit more walking (very easy walk). This spot is also super lovely in autumn!

Lindsay Pryor Arboretum

20 minutes session or longer

This is a lovely quiet nature reserve with large grassy areas and some shadier spots between the trees. Easily accessible so perfect for mini shoots. It is also located under the flight path so it often gets planes flying over which is pretty exciting for little ones!

Queanbeyan Nature Reserve

20 minutes session or longer | Dog friendly

A lovely forest of redwoods near the Canberra Airport. The forest has some shadier areas with deep greens which are perfect for sessions during the day. It also has some more open spaces to make the most of the sunset! Easily accessible from the carpark so it’s perfect for kids!

Pialligo Redwoods

20 minutes session or longer | Dog friendly

A beautiful green garden in Weston Creek with lush green background year round. Close parking makes it perfect for a shorter session or with young children. This spot has quite a bit of shade making is lovely for an earlier session if sunset is too late for your family.

Fetherston Gardens

20 minutes session or longer | Dog friendly

One of my favourite locations for spring blossoms in Canberra! This spot is best around the end of September and October but it can vary depending on the season. It is also a lovely spot for a picnic or a play by the lake. Very accessible so it’s perfect for kids!

Weston Park, Yarralumla

20 minutes session | Dog friendly

Located near the National Museum of Australia, this deck is the perfect spot to catch the sunset over the lake.

Lawson Crescent Viewing Deck

20 minutes session Or Longer | Dog friendly

Another great location to catch the sunset over the lake with views of all the Canberra landmarks too!

Regatta Point

20 minutes session or longer

I am not currently shooting at the arboretum. Photography at the National Arboretum requires pre-approval from the ACT Government and attracts an additional fee of $390 incl gst. See here for further information.

If you wish to shoot at the arboretum please get in touch to discuss further.
